Subhashita

One who reads, writes, sees, inquires, lives in the company of learned men, his intellect expands like the lotus leaf does because of the rays of sun.

When a man is powerful and prosperous, friends gather around him and (come to him) from all directions; (but) if he is out of office and (lost his) fortune, they turn their backs on him, as foes in time of calamity.

“Knowledge is certainly a man’s greatest beauty. It is a safe and hidden treasure.
It provides prosperity, fame and happiness. Knowledge is the teacher of all teachers.
It acts as one’s friend in a foreign country. Knowledge is the Supreme God.
It is the knowledge, not wealth, which is adored by kings. Without knowledge one remains as animal.”

The six faults should be avoided by a person who wishes to attain prosperity, viz., sleep, drowsiness, fear, anger, indolence(inactivity resulting from a dislike of work) and procrastination.

Those who do not have learning, have no austerity, do not give to charity, have neither knowledge nor character, have no good qualities no righteousness. They, on this Mrutyuloka, on this Earth, are being who are loads (literl translation would be; liabilities, those that only receive and don not contribute in return), in the form of people and are animals that simple graze.

Knowledge is lost by laziness; women are lost when they are in the custody of others; cultivation fails when the quantity of seeds sown is very less; an army without a commander is lost too.

Greed is a cause of sin ( a greedy person can do any sin to satisfy his greed) Greed is cause of calamity, greed gives rise to enmity (greedy person invites enemies) Greed destroys a person (a greedy persons life gets spoiled by his own deeds) .

The sun looks alike while rising and setting. Great men too remain alike in both the good and bad times.
